Going Green: Benefits of Trees in Urban Spaces
(NC)—In literature, the most common metaphor for life is a tree. Trees are life giving, life preserving, and unfortunately, in many Canadian towns and cities, they are disappearing.

While environmental issues such as access to clean air and drinking water, and the threat of global warming are of increasing concern to Canadians, it is crucial to consider the benefits provided to us by our trees. The windbreak of trees helps to reduce heating costs by saving on energy consumption. Trees not only absorb harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but also reduce air borne dust and particulate matter; especially important in a time when reports show asthma rates in children have quadrupled in the last 20 years.

Trees not only benefit the environment and beautify our surroundings, but research has shown that they have a positive psychological effect. According to Tree Canada, studies show that hospital patients with window views of trees and greenery recovered faster and with fewer complications than comparable patients without access to such views. They go on to report that trees have also been shown to encourage physical activity in neighbourhoods and schoolyards, helping to check the growing problem of obesity in children.

So why not plant a tree? This simple, effective and beautiful solution has occurred to some companies like skin care expert Aveeno, who this summer – in partnership with Tree Canada – is caring for the environment as well as for your skin. Together, they have implemented the campaign 'Take Action To Inspire Natural Beauty' where Aveeno will donate a portion of its sales to plant trees in urban spaces across Canada.

Michael Rosen, executive director of Tree Canada, is a firm believer in the benefits and necessity of trees in our cities. "Planting trees helps to offset greenhouse gases produced by each and every one of us, everyday," he says. "It also creates more beautiful communities which we can all enjoy – and Aveeno's decision to sponsor the planting of trees in needed schoolyards and communities demonstrates a great commitment to the environment."
