(NC)—Summer is when many Canadians take time to improve their homes. Increasingly, improvement projects are taking the form of dramatic renovations or the complete rebuilding of homes from the ground up – with the results leaving home layouts significantly altered. When homes are changed extensively, safety experts say, it is important to adjust your home fire escape plan without delay so that it takes into account a new home setting that can include new rooms, additional stairwells and even new front and rear doorway locations. But a new national survey shows that most Canadians making big changes to their homes are not taking the time to change their emergency escape plans accordingly. Among those Canadian homeowners surveyed who have renovated or have made plans to renovate in the past year, fully 60% said they had given no thought to updating their home fire escape plan, according to the annual fire safety study commissioned by Duracell and the Canada Safety Council (CSC). "An escape plan based on a previous home's layout is useless and can lead to confusion and delay during the critical seconds of a home fire," said Suzanne Robillard, spokesperson for the CSC. "If you are changing your living environment, take the time to update and practice your new fire safety plan so that every family member knows exactly what to do in an emergency." Families across Canada can improve their fire safety know-how at the sixth annual Duracell Fire Safety Drive, and attend interactive fire safety education events at participating retailers.
