Improving audio in your new home theater | Improving audio in your new home theater |

(NC)—One of the most popular improvements homeowners seek today is a home theatre. For years a television in the corner of the living room or basement recreation room was satisfactory, but things are different now. Large screens, good-sized speakers with surround sound, a full selection of AV equipment, and comfortable seating dedicated to watching and listening is what's desired and increasingly obtained these days. But, unless you're turning the entire project over to audio-video specialists who will handle all the selection and installation, putting your home theatre together takes some study and planning. For some, the easiest way to start their home theatre is to purchase a large flat-panel TV that has built-in speakers. Then, after mounting it on the wall or placing it on some furniture, the viewer can plug it in, sit back and enjoy it. Others, who want a real movie theatre -like experience in their homes, opt for the traditional five-speaker surround sound configuration: a centre speaker, two side speakers in front, and two speakers in the rear of the room. For them, their new digital TV monitor will not have built-in speakers. Placement of the speakers is important to those seeking the ultimate audio experience. There are various ways to handle your speakers, depending upon budget, taste and size of speakers. Mounting and positioning the speakers correctly can be more important to sound quality than choosing components. For most installations, the correct height is around 40 inches from the floor, give or take a few inches either way. Front and centre speakers should be placed as close as possible to the same height, at or near ear level. Surround (or back) speakers are placed slightly behind and above ear level, and facing horizontally, not down at the listener.
