Selecting the right mount for your new flat-panel TV
(NC)—Okay…after studying all the options and shopping around for the best price, you've finally purchased just the right style, make, size and model flat-panel TV. You can hardly wait to get it home.

But then you suddenly think: "Where am I going to put it?"

Assuming you want to place your new TV on a wall (like about half of all digital TV buyers do), you're going to need a wall mount as well. Selecting a mount can be confusing, however. For one thing, there are several manufacturers with a bewildering number and styles of mounts. And, unlike many of the TV manufacturers, few of the mount suppliers are household names. Where does one even start to find the right mount?

The other difficulty encountered by TV consumers is that many sales clerks who are knowledgeable about TVs are not that conversant on mounts. This uncomfortable situation for the purchaser has been addressed by Sanus Systems, a worldwide leader in walls mounts for plasma, LCD and CRT TVs.

Sanus has developed its MountFinder TV Compatibility Database, an interactive tool for matching its full line of VisionMount mounts to individual TVs. The online resource — found on the company's website (www.mountfinder.sanus.com) — allows website users, primarily consumers and AV dealers, to easily select the mounts recommended for a specific TV.

This free service allows users to determine the mount with the desired functionality, such as "low profile," "tilting" or "full motion" features. Clicking on the MountFinder link, users open the search page where they can select a TV manufacturer (there are currently more than 100 manufacturers available) and model (approximately 4,000 of them), and the database returns the specific mounts that are compatible with that model. Problem solved.
